With so many of us unable to work at our offices we figured it would be timely to set out some tips and tricks for how to do that effectively. We'll go through a couple of scenarios and some tips to get the most out of your time when you're isolated. 

If you can't take your computer with you

If you're one of those unfortunate souls who can't take your computer home with you you'll need some ways to access it. Here are a couple of tools you could try to access it (see below). You will need to install a program and run it on the computer you want to access.

Remote meetings

Most meetings are a complete waste of time, but if you find there are some that must continue while everyone is offsite, consider some of the following apps. 

Access to your files

Undoubtedly you cannot work without your files. Here are the best ways to access your files at work and remotely.

Emailing from anywhere

Believe it or not there are some folks who can't access there email from any device... and that's crazy to me. Here are the best email providers. If you aren't using one of these you need to have a long talk with your IT guy:

It's a new year and it's a time for setting resolutions to become a better person. Here's one for ya: help your grandma get a better cyber-security posture. Hopefully these steps are so easy she can teach herself, but she may need your assistance. Unfortunately, the elderly are often targets for spammers and criminals, so it's really important to have "Internet Talk" with your grandma (or you dad or mom or brother or sisters). 

Start Simple

  1. Watch out for SPAM. If you aren't expecting it, there's a good chance it's not real. This can also come in may different ways. Text messages, emails, Facebook messages,  and the classic snail-mail. 
  2. Use some kind of password manager. You've heard it over and over again (hopefully grandma has too), but few of us actually practice not reusing passwords. Here's a link to a blog evaluating different options: External Link.

  1. Have and update anti-virus on your computer. If you're using a Windows 10 PC, the built-in windows defender is good enough. Just make sure that it's turned on and updating automatically. No need to pay for an additional subscription unless you are a business owner and want to make sure you're secure (Talk to us in that case, and we can help). 
  2. Use a modern web browser. I would recommend Chrome as well as Edge Beta (Which is built on chromium). Here's a link to our blog reviewing different web browsers: External Link.

I'm sure you've heard that Windows 7 will no longer be supported starting mid-January. So don't wait to upgrade or replace them! Below are the step-by-step instructions for how to upgrade your Windows 7 computer for FREE! This is a loop that Microsoft opened and allowed back in the day, and apparently they have never closed it!


WARNING: Do this when you can not use the computer for a couple hours. 

Step by Step

Download the Media Creation Tool

  1. Go to https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/software-download/windows10 and click "Download Tool Now." Once the download is completed, open the tool.


2. Select "Upgrade this PC"

3. Select Install.

4. Follow the prompts and wait. This could take a while, so be patient and go get a cup of coffee or a nice cold beer.

LastPass: free and powerful

LastPass is my favorite password manager by far. The free version is fabulous for individuals and the teams and enterprise version is excellent as well. You can easily store and easily access all of your passwords, and it will even fill them in for you. It works across multiple devices and you can have multiple sessions open at the same time. Another great feature is that the free version allows for Multi-Factor Authentication. 

How to setup your LastPass account

1. Go to Lastpass.com and click "Get LastPass Free"

2. Enter your email and a strong master password. I suggest something created from correcthorsebatterystaple.com 

3. Install the Extension: Click "Install LastPass"

4. Click "Add to Chrome"

5. Click "Add Extension"

6. Sign into the extension. Click the black box with 3 white dots in the upper right corner. Type your Email and master password.

7. Open your vault: Slick the red box with 3 white dots, select "Open my Vault"

Enabling Multi-Factor Authentication

Select the "Account Settings" in the lower left hand of the vault

Select tab "Multifactor Options" and then select the "Google Authenticator" pencil to set it up

Set it to Enabled "Yes", then select the Barcode "View" to view the barcode

In your Google Authenticator App, Click the Red "+", then select "Scan a Barcode"... Scan the barcode on your computer... then you're done
